What is the Algoma Residential Community Hospice?

The Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) is a not- for profit, incorporated, registered charity.

Initially mentored by the Group Health Centre, ARCH was founded in 1999. Since then and directed by a 12-person community board, a group of volunteers have worked to bring the dream of a ten-bed residential hospice to reality.

ARCH members and supporters in conjunction with the Hospice Association of Ontario believe that how we treat those who are dying in our community reflects who we are as a society. Everyone has a right to die with dignity, free from pain and surrounded by loved ones.

We are committed to building a residential hospice that will be a haven, a home away from home for dying persons and their families.

Progress in the Past Few Years

In 2004 ARCH initiated our Day Hospice Program in response to a community need. For many years survivors of life threatening illness had access to community support groups. These groups however did not address the needs of those living in the community with terminal illness. The day hospice program offers a therapeutic program of complementary therapies to individuals struggling daily with life threatening illness and a day of respite to their caregivers.

In October 2005 the Liberal Government of Ontario pledged ongoing operational funding for over 30 residential hospices in Ontario. ARCH was approved for funding in 2007/2008.

In June of 2006 the Federal Government approved a grant of $500,000 for our capital campaign. In September 2006 the Municipality pledged $40,000 in 2007 and on October 5th the Provincial Government through NOHFC announced a $1,000,000 contribution to the capital campaign.

Individuals and businesses are coming forward to support out project as our public campaign is now underway.

The Challenge

We are faced with the challenge of raising $3.5 million dollars to provide a residential hospice to the citizens of our community.

Few of us have been untouched by the death of a loved one. Many of us felt helpless in the face of death. Now we have the opportunity to provide this much needed service in Sault Ste. Marie. Please help us provide the kind of service our families, friends and neighbours deserve.
